The travesty of EU 'discards' - the dumping of mostly dead, but perfectly edible fish back into the sea, simply due to a lack of quota. This policy is a disgrace, which does nothing to 'conserve' fish stocks. All that is achieved is to give the gulls a hearty meal.
An estimated one million tonnes of fish each year are dumped due to this ridiculous EU policy. Following a public outcry, the EU is now trying to implement mandatory landings; an even worse prospect for British fishermen. Rather than dumping fish into the sea, fish caught outside of quota will have to be landed and sent to landfill.
Why are we not looking at an Icelandic style system, where fish caught outside of quota is sold by the Government, with the proceeds going towards fisheries research and science?
